Comic Con 2015 (I know, waaaay overdo)

I will preface this blog with a quick shout out to Sissy Jo, who passed away from Breast Cancer a week and half before Comic Con and whose funeral we attended Monday, before heading to San Diego on Wednesday.  I note this, because I think in a way we dedicated (in our hearts) this one to her.  She was one of the soul sisters, but Sis Laura and I were determined to have fun in honor of her.  Despite a few melancholy moments (thanks to clips that brought emotions a little too close to home), I believe we succeeded.

Emotions aside, Sis Laura and I set out on Preview Night, with our dear pal David from Houston, to pick up badges, shirts and misc. happiness from the exhibition floor for Sis Laura (Disney Funko Dumbo, and some art prints. wooo!).  We also found Sir Wicks, though I neglected to get a selfie of the four of us. Whoops. Sorry Fuse, maybe next time.  All in all, it was a fairly low key Preview night, used to gather our loot, ie,  Comic Con Bag (I got Batman v Superman! YAHOO), pre-ordered shirts and badges, three tasks which are best achieved on a day when you're not sharing a convention center with 129,996 other people.

Thursday managed to be fairly low key for the sis and I as well.  We popped in on the William Shatner panel, which, for the day, also included a round up for Extant and Under the Dome.  Those panels were outstanding and hello, who can't look at Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Halle Berry all day? JDM had his glasses on too, ladies. I don't know if I was the only one that swooned at that, but I did.

After leaving ballroom 20, which seemed to become our HALL H for 2015, we cruised the streets of San Diego, well the Gaslamp Quarters to be exact. We made our way up about 5 blocks, before heading back down and enjoying the fare of Henry's pub, otherwise known as the Villains Pub during comic con.  I think it is safe to say, we were chillin' like a villain. ha!  I can say, having recently finished a show I like, it's refreshing and smart, only one person came to mind when I saw the Villain Pub, but I suppose that can remain a mystery.  Hint?  You want a hint?  If you read previous blogs, refreshing and smart should have given it away, but I'll give you a hint, Nah.  Needless to say that must be a pretty well played character, when you see the words, pub, villain and food, and a random book/tv character pops into your mind.  PS.  The Guinness and Caesar Salad (what a mix right!?), excellent.

Friday brought the first of the early morning wake-up calls. Big Bang Theory's Writer's Room was first on our list and this is the day I actually got to spend some time with Jessi and Mal (Jaimie, you went MIA on me kiddo, I was hoping to find you too).   I have come to understand over the last two years, that someone from the show usually pops in as a surprise guest...this year, two someone's popped in.  Kunal Nayyar and Mayim Bialik.  What a fun surprise! It goes without saying that the character "Raj" is my favorite on the show...and yes, he is funny in "real life" too.

I find during this panel that it is the writer's who steal the panel...I mean to make that many people funny on a show, it takes a very good writing team.  The eclectic mix of minds is fantastic and makes you giddy as a writer (fledgling as I am) to see those interactions and input during the panel. It's clearly a popular panel, as it fills the entire room, hence the 4:30am wake up call.

After that, more strolling in the Gaslamp to have lunch with the Comic Con gang and then some exhibit hall time.  I can't remember much else from that day, because by 2pm my mind was a little fried, from a clear lack of sleep the last four days and the 4'ish wake-up call, though in honesty, it could also be because your senses are completely overwhelmed during Comic Con, there is always something to see, do, look at, play on or in (head out of gutters)....it truly is astounding how active that area of San Diego becomes every year.  It's a tradition and I truly hope it always remains in SD.

On to Saturday...well, for TV people this was the gold mine panel day.  Once Upon a Time (Which always takes over two large walls attached to the San Diego Padres Stadium), Grimm, The Simpson's (WITH SPECIAL GUEST, Director GUILLERMO DEL TORO! SQUEEEE!), TV Guide's something or other (Sorry), Seth MacFarlane and his band of voice actors and writers, and Outlander.  The majority of the front section of Ballroom 20 were mainly 'Outlanders', as they call themselves, or something like that.

I love the show, but these are people who have read the books and have a supreme passion for anything "Outlandish" (see what I did there, throwing their words in).  They are an impressive group of people and it is clear they are super charged when it comes to the show. Myself, yes, it is one of my favorites, but I steer more to the shy side, plus I have never read the books, so I can't claim myself to be the super fan. Yes, I did Paley Fest just for Outlander, but more in hopes that they would show the long awaited premiere of Season 1, part 2. LOL!  "Droughtlander" was awful and we're in the midst of it again.  Geez.

Outlander backstory, Have I told this before? Probably.  So long story short (doubtful).  Heidi asked me to go to last year's  Comic Con panel, having just lost her mom (and going through what I was going through), I wanted to do something nice for her so I went, (no 'aww' moments kids, you do this for your dear and close friends).  After the panel I was hooked. Smart writing, both books, since you have to get the idea from somewhere, and of course screenwriting, smart producer, smart actors, amazing costumes.  I love period shows, so how could I not give the show a whirl?

I began watching with my mom and we both enjoyed it (Sadly, she passed the day before the Garrison Commander premiered and for obvious reason I remember that date and episode *sad face*. Nice distraction though, by the way).  In hindsight, I often wonder what she would say about Black Jack Randall?  Mama had a way of taking a character and then reluctantly watching their later or previous works, because someone else is watching (chiefly, my dad).  I say reluctantly, because if you made her bad guy list, their was sincere disdain for the person. I told her, it's not the actor, it's called talent. Period.  So on a scale of 1 to Mom, if you got a mom, you deserve an Emmy or an Oscar.

Anyway, I apologize, back from my side trip to the recent past.  Saturday was fun and pretty cool.  Not sure what you can say about each panel. I only watch one of those shows, though I do have a soft spot for Seth MacFarlane. What can I say?  Too bad he doesn't wear glasses. ha!  Anyway, each panel was lively, each had a fun cast, the TV Guide panel was probably the funniest of them all, except for maybe Outlander.  I promise I am not being biased, but Kristen Dos Santos knows how to moderate a panel (so does Yvette Nicole Brown, OUAT moderator! Thumbs up ladies).  Ms. Dos Santos did Paley and that was awesome, but I think she just might be an unofficial part of Outlander, because they all play so well off of her.  She's funny, they're funny and they seem like a nice little family of co-stars/collaborators.

I must add though, it was rather funny seeing Mr. Heughan in pirate make-up, happily applied by Miss Balfe.  No words can describe those two.  Honestly. I had the opportunity to attend a signing after their panel, (I was hoping to get Heidi's book signed which is why I did it, but no personal autographs. Time constraints, I am assuming).  Tired and worn out from being up since 4 (AM!!), I was about done for the day, but I needed to get something for Heidi that was signed, so I still went.  Those two (who were absolutely charming and friendly), Ms. Gabaldon, Miss Davis, Mr. Moore, all fantastic, lovely and so nice. Nothing seemed forced with any of them, which is refreshing, though I don't normally do the autograph thing, so I am not sure I have anything to compare it with. D'oh.  Thank you to all of them for making that a pleasant experience.  I had the opportunity to side chat with both stars for a moment, and both made me feel less awkward and shy about such an auspicious (right word!?) moment.

I was also grateful I was also able to get some Paley pics to Miss Balfe of everyone there for that particular panel.  They weren't my best pics, since I was far off, but I tried.  I had to narrow it down, since I seemed to have a lopsided amount of pictures of one cast member who wasn't at Comic Con.  Again, what can I say, he's so animated and has great facial expressions.  Does he wear glasses?    Hmm...I know, I know. Stop me while I am ahead, before I get any more punchier than I am while writing this.  Doh!

As for the pics, I just ask that you don't judge me.  I don't do it for anything except to make others happy.  I am sure I am not the only one, but I love to take pictures and I love for people to have personal memorabilia from their journey's through life. Sis Laura worked in the entertainment industry and she said it was something nice and personal for her clients when they would get things like that.  Now, just for the record, I am no paparazzi.  I don't go out of my way to take the pictures, I snap away if I am at an event where camera's are allowed.  It sounds hokey, but it's how I am.   I just keep getting lucky that I am able to get pictures to the Outlander people, though my sister delivered the Comic Con ones at Paley fest, since I couldn't get past the rope.  She's a slippery one, that Sis Laura, you always have to watch her, especially when she is on a mission. LOL!

Well...seems as though I dedicated quite a bit of time to a show that I like...that said...here is a bunch of pictures I took during my four days...not all of them, but most.

Until the next time I write (working on a new story, so it could be some time)...Stay positive. Live positive. Be Positive...you only go around this lifetime one time, so make it count. *blowing kisses*\

I'm sorry they are out of order, I was having technical difficulties uploading them. Ergh. lol

it's that time of year! Waiting in the badge line.

From a personal journey to...

I have blogged off and on about a personal journey I have been on for about a year or so.  It's nothing earth shattering for anyone but me.  I hate to say it, but I kind of became a cliché.  Indeed, I had become that person who needed to find themselves.  One of my favorite quotes along the way came from Tolkien, "Not all those who wander are lost".  It kind of contradicts my previous statement, well not kind of, it does, because I talk about finding myself, but truly, I knew where I was all the time.  Are you confused yet? Think of it as standing outside of your body inside a hall of mirrors.  Like a carnival there are images of you everywhere, but only one of those images are you.  So you go about seeking the solid figure and along the way you hit dead ends, walls, other mirrors with images of yourself and so on, until you finally stop, breathe and realize if you look at the mirror in front of you, there you are.  You stop trying so hard...

The single person's guide to Valentine's Day.

Are you single and fretting over Valentine's? Maybe you're becoming increasingly depressed, or blue, because you keep seeing those jewelry commercials on television, or those candy commercials?  Or your friend's or coworkers keep telling you their plans, or hopes of a potential special moment? Well, I am here to virtually hug you and to tell you, it will be okay.  First, don't begrudge your friend's or coworkers their happiness.  Smile sincerely and be happy for them.  Being happy for them, will make you feel better and will increase your outer (yet invisible) glow.  Hey, you might glow so brightly, you could end up with a Valentine's date if you go to Happy Hour on a Friday night.  Now, how do you get over yourself and move beyond the stigma, that is kind of self-imposed, of being single on Valentine's day?  Take your power back and put you first.  There are a million and ten places open on Valentine's day.  Severa...

Meditation for a Full or New Moon.

Are you one of those people who are a little unbalanced emotionally, or mentally, during a full moon?  Perhaps you go a little crazy, or maybe you turn into a hairless werewolf? Well, I may have the solution you are looking for.  I can't promise it will work miracles, but there is a possibility it might be able to help bring you back to a desirable level of sanity. Some people don't give the moon enough credit. Sure a full moon lights up the earth a bit more than usual, and sure it might make some canines bay at the moon, but it can also mess with your personal being. Think about it, moon cycles play with the ocean tide right?  Well, seeing how the body is made up of a large percentage of water, isn't it plausible that the moon is also playing with the human body? Throwing it off balance and making you feel not so emotionally fresh? I am not a scientist. I am not a trained person when it comes to meditations, so I am putting that out there now. ...
